Rome Countryside: TIVOLI

The tour has been designed for guests who have already seen the famous attractions and beauties of Rome and are looking for a truly wonderful and exceptional excursion.

After approx. 2 hours driving through beautiful surrounding valleys you will arrive to Tivoli, which was a favourite resort for Roman travellers. Hadrian's Villa, the largest and most sumptuous palace in the Roman Empire. Hadrian Emperor ordered the construction of the villa and personally supervised the works. Villa d'Este boasts one of the finest Baroque gardens all over Italy. A trip to Tivoli is a magic journey into a Baroque time. Beautiful gardens, mazes and hundreds of gurgling fountains are the prime attraction of this gorgeous summer villa built in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito D'Este, son of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia. Magical place where five hundred fountains keep tons of flowing water. The courtyard which correspond to the present entrance of the villa, was the cloister of a Benedectine convent incorporated in the monumental building of the villa.

The Travertin Factories and the Gregorian Villa in Tivoli

Extensive deposits of Travertin exist at Tivoli, Italy, near Rome. In fact, travertine derives its name from this town. Tivoli was known as Tibur in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone. With your Driver Guide you'll visit some of these Factories and you can see and touch the beautiful worked travertin.

The Villa Gregoriana was created out of the necessity to defend the town of Tivoli from the ruinous floods of the Aniene. The villa is positioned in a very steep valley, in ancient times called the "Valley of Hell", carved out at the foot at the ancient acropolis of Tivoli by the river which here, in two drops, descends over 130 metres.
