Amalfi
Its foundation is traced back to the Romans (its coat of arms bears the inscription Descendit ex patribus Romanorum). In the ninth century became one of the Maritime Republics rival Pisa, Venice and Genoa for control of the Mediterranean.
The Maritime Code of Amalfi, better known as Tables of Amalfi, had a great influence until the seventeenth century.
Amalfi reached its peak in the XI century, then began a rapid decline: in 1131 it was conquered by the Normans in 1135 and 1137 and sacked by Pisa. In 1343, then, a storm resulting tsunami destroyed much of the city.
The most famous monument of Amalfi is certainly the Duomo in Arab-Sicilian style and dedicated to the patron Saint Andrew. Its construction was begun in the XI century and completed with many additions. It is characterized by the imposing facade, bronze portals made in 1066 in Constantinople, to the beautiful cloister of Paradise and the famous staircase.
Traditionally, each year a crew of rowers amalfitani part in the Race of Maritime Republics weapons in defiance of the three city counterparts.
For a misinterpretation of a Latin text, the philologist Giambattista Pio claimed that the compass was invented dall'amalfitano Flavio Gioia. In the text in question (Amalphi in Campania veterinary MAGNESITE Usus inventus to Flavio traditur), however, does not mean Flavio as the inventor of the compass, but only as one who reported the news. But it seems that boaters amalfitani were among the first to use that instrument.
Particularly successful in the history of the city, and still alive, is the paper industry, linked to the production of valuable paper of Amalfi.
